For the last 18 years, Maureen T. Coffey has been the Municipal Court Judge for the Town of Hilton Head Island, South Carolina. While her primary focus will be in the area of criminal defense, a driving force in her decision to return to private practice has been her desire to develop a plaintiff’s practice to help those who have been injured or discriminated against. She has long held a passion for helping those who cannot help themselves. In the late 90’s Maureen co-founded the Low Country Legal Clinic, which offered legal aid in the area of domestic relations to those who could not otherwise afford legal counsel. Prior to becoming a judge, Maureen handled immigration matters, all aspects of family law matters, as well as general civil litigation matters.
Maureen is also the founder of the WeSaidYes app, which is an affirmative consent app that she developed to help reduce the number of sexual assaults taking place on college campuses through documented informed affirmative consent.
She received her BA from Vanderbilt University and her JD from the George Mason School of Law, and has been licensed to practice law in the State of South Carolina since 1994.
Maureen recently received her South Carolina Supreme Court Family Court Mediation Certification on July 15, 2019.
She resides in Hilton Head Island with her husband and their three children.
